i really love this 80s-meets-futuristic look! very blade runner. which i must say, blade runner is one of the top 5 most inspirational movies for me style wise lately hahaha. the best part of this look is how it plays with masculine and feminine-the strong shoulders, high heels, cropped hair and elbow length gloves. truly innovative!

so i just went on another inadvertent hiatus, but ive just been so busy with work and school lately.

this isn't directly related to fashion, but sometimes i just like to stick in a few other relevant things on my blog. i just wanted to republish this audio from perez hilton of howard stern talking about heterosexism (im sorry one of my pet peeves is when people, i mean everyone does this, but when people use the word homophobia. phobia implies like a compulsive and irrational fear, something more psychological. sexism is a social construct) and why he tries to shy away from using the word "fag."

i am a hardcore believer in equal rights, and consider myself an ally to the LGBT community, so i always am full of pride when someone famous comes out against the inequality in our system.

anyway, he makes such simple, valid points. it's almost impossible to argue with him. check it out!

i long for the days that people got dressed up at all ever. i mean i guess i wouldn't sacrifice the semblance of gender equality we have today for the mad men era, but people really looked so much better then.

i am a huge fan of old movies and i love the way they used to glamorize all aspects of travel. trains, planes, cars, all of it seems so majectic! now it's like, throw on some uggs and leggings, show the world you're butt crack and you're plane-ready.

i know everybody is in a tizzy over the collection lanvin did for h&m, but that does not include me. i thought the show was a bit... dare i say, gauche? i would use the yiddish word ungapatchkit (meaning like, just TOO much, tacky, over the top) to describe the show and the looks. i thought it was really unfocused.

j crew really seems to be on top of the game lately. they definitely have captured the hearts of a really big group of people with their most recent collections. there's no doubt that they provide a quality product, but i'm wondering if my recent obsession with them is because of the styling in their promos, or because of the actual garments.

no DOUBT i would probably kill some people for the floor length sequin skirt, but i'm curious... how much of this would i actually want to pick up and buy if i saw it hanging on a rack? how much of this is really as innovative as the kick-ass styling makes it all seem?

it can be frustrating sometimes when you tell people you want to spend the rest of your life working in an industry that, let's be honest, kind of gets a bad rap (or is it wrap?)

well thanks to an assignment for my nonverbal communication class, i've actually been looking into some scholarly takes on the industry, as well as fashion as a form of self expression

i stumbled upon an excerpt from a book called ambivalence, and its relation to fashion and the body by anne boultwood and robert jerrard that i felt compelled to post!

"Both the body and fashion are independently related to self-awareness, and the nature of their joint interaction suggests a relationship between the two. Whilst the nature of such a relationship remains unclear, the literature in both fields reveals potentially common themes. Body-fashion interaction lends expression to the unconscious experience of self, both internally as part of a 'selfing' process, and externally by creating an identity to present to others. Conflicts within the psyche, played out on the body, contribute to a fragmented sense of self, and the view of fashion as exacerbating its disintegration may be contrasted with the belief in the power of fashion to integrate. The ambiguity of this internal conflict is echoed by the conflicting social-psychological needs of imitation/identification and differentiation that characterise the social experience of the body, and are manifested in the individual's response to fashion. The apparent superficiality of fashion is belied by its role in giving expression to the ambivalence derived from the internal conflict of the individual, and the external ambivalence of postmodern society. Individual ambivalence focuses on the concept of the ideal body, an image created by society for the objectified body to aspire to, and a platonic ideal that encapsulates the individual sense of embodiment. Fashion's aspirational role is to provide a means of creating an approximation of the ideal. This occurs at the body boundary, the threshold, which marks the demarcation between self, as, experienced within the body, and nonself as it impinges from without. The ambiguity of the body-clothing threshold fuels the fashion process, and it may be that body boundary represents an interface between the experience of self and its expression through fashion."

speaking of icons, i must say i am completely taken with dakota fanning. she and her sister, elle, are such natural actors it's a joy to watch them on screen.

i will be the first to admit that i HATED dakota when she was young because she was just in every single movie ever and making more money than julia roberts (who i also hate). but it just seems that youth is taking over the world (tavi? a style icon and taste maker at 13. willow smith? her first hit single at 9) so i've resigned myself to find the joy in young people expressing themselves, rather than be bitter at my own lack of success comparatively.

that being said, dakota is a star, a remarkable dresser, and an undeniable talent. i really look forward to seeing where her career goes in the future. not to mention the girl is damn photogenic!

i just got back from a lovely, albeit short, visit to my native country of buffalo. i had a wonderful time with my family, celebrating dad's 60th birthday!! i also was lucky enough to get this sick new pair of shoes at shoefly on elmwood.

sadly, my boyfriend did not get any new shoes, because the poor thing has really expensive taste, and we are both so broke.
